Tips for Longer Lasting Blooms

Flowers are one of life's simple pleasures.  At Terrain Flowers, we source fresh product from the best suppliers and then clean, hydrate and condition every stem to ensure maximum quality and vase life* of your flower arrangement.

For any fresh cut flower, we recommend adding water every day.  Replace the water on the third day.

For vase arrangements, slowly add water to within an inch of the top edge.  This ensures thorough hydration of all stems.  Fresh water helps minimize bacteria growth.

Our hand-tied bouquets are typically packaged in a cellophane bag of water or water tubes so there is no need to recut the stems until the third or fourth day; simply remove the cello bag and place the tied bouquet in a clean vase of water.

For flowers in floral foam, top up the water in the vase, container or tray daily to at least half an inch from the top.  Floral foam will dry out quickly without a daily top up.

* Vase life is determined by many factors, including the time of year that the flowers are harvested, whether they are at the peak or end of their season, the heat or humidity in your home or office, and attention to fresh water.  With our use of a mix of long-lasting and fleeting flowers, we estimate that your arrangement or bouquet will last 3-5 days in most home or office environments (it is common for them to last beyond a week).

Other Suggestions

Placement To display and enjoy your flowers, choose a cool spot out of direct sunlight and away from drafts, heating vents and equipment.

Grooming Maintenance  Your flowers are typically set amongst lush premium foliage; as the flowers fade, the overall beauty and structure of the design remains. Carefully snip blooms as they fade.  Avoid pulling the entire stem out as each arrangement is made with a structural interlocking of the stems (which keeps the floral elements securely in place). Pulling stems out may disrupt or break other stems, leaving gaps in the design.

A Note About Flower Food  While some florists provide sachets of flower food, our experience and certain studies show that the flower food is most often mixed  disproportionately, resulting in adverse effects on flower longevity.  (Too much or too little of a good thing!)  All our flowers are hydrated in our shop in carefully measured professional food and water solution.  Once they arrive at your place, a top up of plain cold water does the job (and daily refreshing)!

Protect Your Furniture  Remember to protect delicate surfaces from moisture and excess water; while great for flowers, less so much for fine woods and other delicate finishes.
